The tale of the 2nd Generation Colt black-powder line actually began in the late 1950s with Val Forgett, founder of Navy Arms, and Italian gunmakers Vittorio Gregorelli and Aldo Uberti.

With the reintroduction of the legendary 1851 Navy-a gun made famous by James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickok-Colt's embarked on an 11-year odyssey that would result in one of the most popular and collectible series the Hartford, Connecticut, armsmaker would ever produce. One of the more interesting footnotes in the company's story, however, began in 1971, when it made the unprecedented decision to re-introduce a model it had last built in 1873. When Imperato took over and expanded the line up of models for the "F" Series, Uberti still supplied barrels, cylinders, and backstraps to Imperato. On the other hand, a Uberti assembled gun would require a box of parts and a skilled crafstman some time to put together a completed working gun. You could easily exchange parts for Colts with very minor fitting. A Navy Arms employee stated that parts that were rejected were reworked by Navy Arms until they were in spec. This made for a much higher standard for parts specifications and higher quality parts being used to assemble the "C" Series. Colt had an actual Inspection Department that all of these "Parts Kits" had to go through. Thoses particular parts had to be within a much tighter specification range than the components used for Uberti's guns. Ĭolt assembled and finished the "C" Series guns after they received "parts kits" from Val Forgett that were received from Uberti. A Uberti wedge will need to be fitted to work.
